I’ve witnessed only one instance of church discipline. It was very awkward. A college-aged woman in the congregation, whose father was a deacon, became pregnant out of wedlock. I remember seeing her stand with her family before the congregation, confess her sin, and ask the church’s forgiveness. I remember being utterly perplexed by what was happening. What business is this of mine, I thought, and what right does the church have to forgive her sins?
In our contemporary Western context, church members expect a pastor to teach and train them through their preaching, but they don’t recognize the minister’s responsibility—and authority—to rebuke and correct (2 Timothy 3:16). This week, we’re featuring the sermon "Where Church Discipline Is Practiced, Christ Is Present," John MacArthur’s treatment of this difficult practice. His insights will remind you of the Bible’s mandate for church discipline and inspire you to discuss the topic with your congregation.
John Perkins addresses another difficult topic for preachers: developing leaders from within the congregation. In "Lord, Give Us Leaders Who Can Lead Us to Justice," Perkins describes the church environment from which leaders are most likely to emerge.
Finally, Steve May encourages us to embrace a truth we know all too well in "A Leader’s Work Is Never Done."

Church Discipline Really Works (pt. 1)
When you make it loving and redemptive.
An interview with Ken Sande of Peacemaker Ministries.
How do churches need to think differently about church discipline?
The word "discipline" describes two aspects of church life. First there is formative discipline. This is the idea of bringing people to maturity in Christ the way a football coach disciplines his team through daily practices. This includes encouragement, practice, instruction, and showing them what is right and good. This is what a church does through its ministries.
