[Foto] Telephoto lens beats shorter lens in macro application

【Gear】
Camera Body: Pentax K-x

Lens: 1) Pentax FA* 200mm f/2.8; 2) Pentax DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited; 3) Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 Macro

長焦微距 > 小廣角微距

This field photoshoot has demonstrated that telephoto lens (90mm, 105mm, 180mm, 200mm, 300mm…) is more suitable than its wider-angle counterparts (35mm, 50mm) for macro application for having a more useful depth of field.

Wider angel lenses, beucause of its much thinner ‘actual’ (as opposed to ‘perceived’) depth of field than that of telephoto lense when set at the same aperture, have to be stopped down when getting close to the subject.
This has one main drawback: stopping-down tends to reduce its image sharpness (caused by diffraction and slower-shutter image blur, the latter depending on ambient light condition)

Telephoto lens works better for purpose of isolating the subject from the intrusion of unwelcomed people or objects, within its entire optimal aperture range (f/2.8-9).
Moreover, telephoto lens helps keep the shooter at a distance from the subjects that are subject to human disturbance (such as bugs).
